The Gospel of Supply Side Jesus

The Gospel of Supply Side Jesus (Reprinted from Al Franken's "Lies: And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them - A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right")

Thomas: Shouldn't you feed the lepers, Supply Side Jesus?

Supply Side Jesus: No, Thomas, that would just make them lazy.

James: Then shouldn't you at least heal them, Supply Side Jesus?

Supply Side Jesus: No, James, leprosy is a matter of personal responsibility. If people knew I was healing lepers there would be no incentive to avoid leprosy.

(...)

Supply Side Jesus: It is easier for a rich man to enter Heaven seated comfortably on the back of a camel, than it is for a poor man to pass through the eye of a needle! If you are prosperous on Earth, that means that God is rewarding your rugged individualism. If you are poor, it is a sign that God frowns on your reliance on handouts.

Knowledge!! What a wonderful and credible display of knowledge is this Gabriel!! Have you found new hidden wisdom in comics?! Have you gone mad with all your wide learning and reading that you must quote the circus?!

Don't you dare accuse the Most High King of pettiness! Your trespass is more than just a disagreement with a mere man's opinion! The stench of your arrogance and pride has reached to the throne of Holy One! Because you have sought to make light of Him and turn men's mockery against Him, He will subject you to ridicule and make your knowledge an object of scorn for all men to see!

I don't understand the real concepts of 'supply side economics' to see if it's relevant to the overall message of the story, but this comic has been a favourite of mine for quite a while now. It's an excellent satire, and probably related to the words at the top of this blog...

Eh, this caricature was actually originally targeted at who? Jesus? Or the churches (so-called "Right")that teach the false prosperity gospel?

If, and I think it is, the latter, then it certainly makes sense.

But we do need to take note that there's a difference between the Right and their own mis-rep of who Jesus was, and who Jesus really was, or rather, is.

In other words, we can get dis-illusioned with institutional "Christianity" and rightly and necessarily so. But we don't have to lose God in the process.

Hope I make sense.
